Patio & Bistro String Light Installation in Virginia

String lights turn a patio into a room. We install them properly — professional-grade cable, correct tension, safe electrical, and mounting that holds through a Virginia summer storm instead of sagging by August. Two ways to do it: a seasonal warm-white bistro install for a wedding, a party, or a single summer, or a permanent color-changing system that stays up year-round and changes color from your phone. Both are installed by our crew across Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia, and Richmond. Get a free patio design quote or see recent installs.

Professional-Grade Permanent Bistro & Patio Lighting

Our permanent patio system uses Minleon RGB color-changing LEDs on commercial-grade weather-resistant cable, rated to stay outdoors through every Virginia season. Each bulb can be any color, so the same run of lights over your patio does warm white on a Tuesday, orange for Halloween, red and green in December, and your team’s colors on a Saturday. Control it from an iOS or Android app: pick a scene, dim it, schedule it, or run animated effects. Standard installation covers up to 100 feet of lighting at heights up to 14 feet.

If you are not sure, start seasonal. Our backyard bistro lighting is the most requested spring and summer install we do, and it is the cheapest way to find out whether you like lights over your patio before spending four times as much on a permanent system. Plenty of our permanent customers started there.

What String Light Installation Costs in Virginia

Typical professional string light installation in this market runs about $250 to $1,200 for a residential property, for a standard warm-white install. Our seasonal bistro install starts at $500 and our permanent Minleon RGB system starts at $2,000 for 100 feet. The gap between those numbers is not markup — it is a different product. A $400 warm-white install gives you one look, hung once. The permanent system is color-changing, app-controlled, programmable, and rated to stay up indefinitely.

The variable that moves a quote most is mounting, which is the next section. Send us your patio dimensions and we will quote the actual run rather than an average.

Mounting — the Part Most Quotes Skip

String lights need something to hang from. If you have a house wall on one side and mature trees or an existing pergola on the other, mounting is straightforward and inexpensive. If you have an open patio, a pool deck, or a new-build yard with young trees, you need poles  and mounting structures are quoted separately from the lighting itself. That is normal across the industry, but most companies bury it and surprise you at the quote. We would rather say it here.

Common patio layouts we install

An overhead canopy running back and forth across the whole patio for even coverage. A perimeter run around the edge, which uses less cable and frames the space. A pergola or arbor run, where the structure does the work for you. And pole-supported spans for open patios, pool decks, and lawns with nothing to anchor to. We will show you which layout suits the space during the site visit, before you commit.

Height and structure

Standard installation runs up to 14 feet, which suits most residential patios and covered outdoor dining. Taller spans, permanent poles, and structural anchoring are quoted after we see the site.

Restaurants, Breweries, and Commercial Patios

Outdoor dining lives or dies on how the space feels after sunset, and RGB gives a venue something warm white cannot: brand colors, seasonal changes, and a different look for private events, all without sending anyone up a ladder. Scheduling means the patio lights itself at dusk and shuts off at close. For larger sites and multi-building properties, see our commercial lighting services, and for architectural feature work we also install light bars, RGB cubes, and RGB globes and spheres.

Pairing Patio Lighting with the Rest of the Property

Patio lighting is usually the first permanent system people buy, because it is the space they use most. Many customers add permanent roofline lighting afterwards so the house and the patio run on the same color scheme, or take the fully managed plan so the programming is handled for them. For one-off occasions we also do wedding lighting, broader event lighting, and seasonal Christmas light installation. The full range is in our lighting catalog.

Patio Light Installation FAQs

How much does outdoor string light installation cost?

Around $250 to $1,200 is typical in Virginia for a standard warm-white install. Ours start at $500 seasonal and $2,000 for the permanent RGB system covering 100 feet. Mounting poles, if your patio needs them, are quoted separately.

That is common on open patios and pool decks, and it is solved with poles. We set permanent or semi-permanent posts positioned to carry the span you want. It is quoted after a site visit because pole count and placement depend entirely on the shape of the space.

Yes. That is the difference between the permanent system and a seasonal install. The permanent cable and bulbs are rated for continuous outdoor use in Virginia’s full temperature range. The seasonal bistro product is warranted for up to 90 days and is meant to come down.

Most residential patios are finished in a single visit once any mounting structures are in place. Sites needing poles or electrical work take longer. We give you a schedule with the quote.

Usually not. The system runs from a standard exterior outlet within reach of the install. If your patio has no outdoor power at all, that is electrical work we will flag during the site visit. More in our FAQs.
